Does max efficiency equal max heat for fireplaces?
No, maximum efficiency does not necessarily mean maximum heat output. Here's why:

Vent-Free Appliances: These systems are highly efficient because they use the oxygen in the room to operate, with nearly all of the heat staying in the room. However, they are rated at lower BTUs to maintain safety. For example, an 18" vent-free burner may produce around 30,000 BTUs, which is efficient but limits the total heat output.

Vented Appliances: Vented systems, such as an H-burner, allow much higher BTU ratings. An 18" vented burner can be rated at 155,000 BTUs, offering significantly more heat potential. Even though vented systems lose some heat through the chimney or vent, they still deliver far more heat overall compared to vent-free systems.
In short, while vent-free systems are efficient, vented fireplaces can produce more heat despite some heat loss due to venting. Efficiency focuses on retaining heat, but maximum heat output comes from higher BTU ratings.
