Outdoor Patio Heaters: Which Variety is Right for Your Home? | Starfire Direct

Did you know that adding outdoor patio heaters to your backyard can extend the amount of time you and your loved ones can spend enjoying the outdoors each year? Many people believe that they can’t afford outdoor heaters and therefore consider the winter season a time when backyard entertaining and relaxation has to stop. That isn’t the case! No matter how much you can afford to spend or how much heat you need for your outdoor space, Starfire Direct has an outdoor heating system for you.

Before you make a purchase, take some time to learn about the different varieties of outdoor patio heaters and what they can do for you.

  1. Where Do You Need Heat?

Larger freestanding units can heat up to 25 feet of space, so if you have a big area or will be regularly entertaining many guests during cold weather, this might be your best option. If you only need to heat a small amount of space suitable for a single family or couple, a wall unit or a smaller mobile heater might be better options. If you’re looking to create both heat and a large centerpiece that everyone can gather around, an outdoor fire pit is the perfect solution!

  1. What Fuel Source Will Work Best for You?

Outdoor patio heaters can run on electricity, natural gas, or propane.

Propane is affordable, making this a good choice for many. You can purchase propane in tanks and move them wherever you like. This is perfect for larger outdoor setups such as weddings that need warmth for hundreds of guests.

Natural gas requires a fuel line within the vicinity of the area you want to heat. If you already use natural gas inside your home, you may be able to run a gas line to the area where your patio heater will be installed.  If your home is electric or propane based, or you otherwise cannot find a fuel line, another variety of heater will provide more bang for your buck. If you can use natural gas, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s a very environmental choice.

Electric heaters are inexpensive and safe to operate, but they require an outlet, so they are better for smaller areas. They can be placed around your patio, but it will require extension cords or a professionally run electric line.

  1. Do You Want a Radiant or Forced-Air Heater?

Forced-air heaters are just as their title describes: heaters that force warm air into the surrounding area. Radiant (also known as infrared) heaters warm nearby objects, such as chairs and tables.

Forced-air heaters are generally better for areas with somewhat contained borders, such as covered patios, garages, tents, or workshops. If an area is out in the open and exposed to cool breezes, infrared heaters will likely provide more beneficial heat.
