About this item

Add natural rugged beauty to your fire feature with American Fire Products Black Lava Rock—a timeless and functional fire media that brings earthy texture and reliable performance to any fire pit or fireplace. Formed from naturally occurring volcanic rock, each piece is rich in organic character and designed to withstand high temperatures, making it an ideal choice for homeowners looking to blend rustic aesthetics with lasting durability.

This porous, lightweight media is not only visually striking—it also provides excellent insulation and airflow within your fire feature. The irregular shape and matte black finish of each rock help create a dynamic, layered flame presentation, while also enhancing combustion efficiency. Whether used alone for a raw, natural look or as a base layer beneath fire glass or logs, these lava rocks improve heat distribution and help protect your burner components.

Suitable for use with both natural gas and propane fire features, Black Lava Rock is an incredibly versatile option for fire pits, fireplaces, and fire bowls—indoors or outdoors. It does not burn, melt, or emit toxic fumes, and its ability to endure the most intense flame conditions ensures lasting value. Plus, its unique texture provides a bold, organic contrast to smooth surfaces like fire glass or polished metal burners.

Installation is effortless: simply pour the lava rocks into your fire tray or burner pan—no adhesives, cutting, or tools needed. These rocks are low-maintenance and weather-resistant, designed to perform year-round without fading or breaking down. Cleaning is easy too—just rinse with water to remove soot or debris and keep your setup looking fresh and inviting.

American Fire Products Black Lava Rock is a smart and stylish choice for those who appreciate authenticity and performance. Whether you're designing a rugged outdoor fire pit, a cozy fireplace centerpiece, or a custom gas burner installation, this natural fire media adds warmth, texture, and elemental charm to your space—all while supporting reliable, efficient operation.

CAUTION: ‘Lava Rocks’ are designed to be used as a media base or by themselves. For optimal results, our recommendation is to pour a minimum of 2-inches over your burner, which allows the gas to filter evenly through the media - creating a beautiful flame.

Fire Pit Media Popping: Please be aware that fire pit media such as fire glass, lava rock, ceramic stones, and similar materials may pop or jump during use. This can occur when moisture is present either within the media or in surrounding air pockets. When heated, trapped moisture rapidly turns to steam, causing sudden pressure that may result in the media cracking, shifting, or projecting small fragments.

To Reduce Risk:

  • Always use dry media.
  • Store media in a moisture-free environment.
  • Light fires gradually to allow for safe heating.
  • Use caution and maintain a safe distance during initial ignition and operation.

Soot Build Up: Gas burners—whether fueled by Natural Gas or Propane—may naturally produce some soot or black residue over time. This is a normal byproduct of combustion. Natural Gas typically burns cleaner, while Propane, being a heavier gas, may produce more visible soot. However, excessive or rapid soot buildup may indicate issues such as improper burner installation, incorrect gas-to-air ratios, or obstructed or poorly placed fire media.

To Minimize Soot Accumulation:

  • Ensure professional installation.
  • Follow manufacturer guidelines for media placement.
  • Periodically inspect and clean burner components
  • Always operate gas burners in well-ventilated areas and monitor for signs of abnormal performance.
